100 Things About Moi - February 2007

Practically everyone else in blogland did this eons ago but I'm just getting around to it - hey, I've been busy! ;)


1. I was born in Washington, DC


2. My name isn't on my birth certificate, but my footprint is


3. I couldn't say "mommy" as a little girl and called her "mimi" instead, which then became my nickname for years and years


4. I have 2 older sisters and a younger brother


5. For lack of room, I slept in a crib until I was seven, when my brother was born; then I slept on the couch with my sisters and continued sleeping on a couch until I left home


6. I liked to catch and play with frogs when I was little but never got warts from them


7. I'm Irish and Swedish


8. I don't speak any foreign language


9. I have green eyes with gold specks... or blue, depending on the weather and what I'm wearing


10. I don't wear make-up


11. I was fortunate as a teen and didnt suffer from bad skin or acne


12. I'm skeptical by nature and question people's motives more than I should sometimes


13. I tend to cry when I get really angry then I get angrier because I cry and cry more because I'm angry - it's a vicious cycle


14. I've grown pretty assertive and am not as shy as I used to be


15. I'm a non-practising Catholic


16. I'm a cat person who prefers Siamese cats for their beauty and intelligence, and presently own two mixed-Siamese kitties


17. I like dogs but don't like to take care of them - I think they're more demanding than children


18. I spell very well and won national spelling awards in high school


19. I didn't learn to drive until I was 30


20. I've had one speeding ticket in the intervening years


21. I didn't get my ears pierced until I was 30 (30 was a good year!)

I was 50-something when I got the second holes pierced


23. I love to read and have pretty eclectic taste in books, but my favorites are detective/mystery


24. Reading in the bathroom escapes me - I want to be comfy when I read and sitting on the pot isn't my idea of comfortable


25. I've been married twice, divorced once

28. My beautiful grandchildren fill my life with sunshine - I hate living so far away from them all


29. I love to laugh

My favorite sound is a child's laughter

I love to blow and chase bubbles with children

I can't sew, knit, or crochet but I can embroider and do crewel work

I can roller skate but can't ice skate worth diddly

I haven't been able to master using chopsticks

I have a lousy sense of direction - I can get lost in my backyard

I enjoy cards, board games, puzzles - word and jigsaw - and on-line games

I love oldies Rock and Roll music

I still have my rather large 45 rpm record collection from my teen years and enjoy listening and reminiscing occasionally

I absolutely can't stand Mick 'Lips' Jagger and wouldn't walk across the street to see him if the show was free - you couldn't pay me enough to sit through it

I absolutely can't stand rap or heavy metal either

I love to dance - I can't anymore because of my breathing but I still love it

I'm forever using song titles or lyrics to make a point, to joke or tease, or as parts of conversation

I used to need music to go to sleep by and kept my clock-radio on - now I can't stand any kind of noise, especially my husband's snoring, and need total quiet

I always have the TV on while I'm on the computer - I like the background noise

I've never had a broken bone and still have all my original parts - tonsils, appendix, gall bladder, etc.

l love the beach, the sun, and the water - I tan very nicely, like the Coppertone ad

I could easily live on the beach (preferably the Caribbean) and have always wanted my own private one with an A-frame house

I love crab legs drenched in melted butter and can eat pounds of them in a sitting

I can't stand peach fuzz in my mouth - ugh!

I still like to color in coloring books

I bowled regularly on a ten-pin league for about 20 years - I miss it

I used to ride motorcycles when I was younger and would still if we had one

I played softball for many years where I worked and was the only female player on our company All-Star softball team

I smoked for over 30 years and now have emphysema and am on oxygen 24/7 (which explains the dancing thing above)

I hate roller coasters - I actually get physically ill on them

I sleep au naturel except when we have company or sleep elsewhere

I love the luxury of fancy eyelet-trimmed bed linens

I love smell goods - Tova and L'air du Temps are my favorite scents

I spray White Shoulders cologne on my pillows when I change sheets and on guest pillows when we have guests

I don't tolerate bullies

I avoid negative people and am drawn to rational, intelligent, honest people with a sense of humor

I'm pretty astute and trust my instincts

I don't suffer fools gladly, and can't tolerate ignorance. Like the comic character, Maxine, I think that stupid should hurt

I have no patience with lack of personal responsiblity either

I'm irritated by people who won't enunciate

I like people who assume the person they're talking to has the native intelligence to understand what they're saying

I have a major "thing" about people who feel the need to explain the obvious

I never could stand the smell of cigars

I don't like politics much and won't discuss it, along with religion or abortion with others - it's an exercise in futility and creates ugliness in otherwise nice people

I love movies, especially ones that touch my emotions - tear-jerkers, comedies, drama, mysteries - not fond of slapstick in any form

One of my favorite movie lines is from Independence Day when Will Smith says to Jeff Goldblum - "No, really... you think?" as they're speeding away from the aliens. Cracks me up every time.

I think Anthony Hopkins is the best actor of our time

I love dark chocolate, especially if it's from Holland

Coffee is my beverage of choice though I don't drink as much since I stopped smoking

Which, by the way, I did almost 12 years ago!

77. I love squeaky clean and shiny windows and mirrors

I detest cleaning the stove/oven and would rather clean any number of toilets

Which is why we have a flat-top stove and self-cleaning oven

My first car that I bought all by myself was a 1982 Mustang

I don't own a cell phone - or an iPod

I have a beautiful collection of kaleidoscopes

I've never had a passport

I don't drink much, but when I do, my favorite alcoholic drink is a Golden Cadillac

I don't like beer, it gives me a headache and just tastes nasty

I try to avoid fast food at all costs with the possible exception of Mickey D's french fries and even they're not as good as they used to be

I love turtleneck tops/sweaters, especially layered

I don't have any tatoos or intentions of getting any at this late date, but wanted one when I was younger

I always wanted a convertible and may get one yet - maybe a red one

I refuse to "go gentle into that good night" - I color my hair to cover the gray

I'm easy going and very good natured and it takes a lot to really piss me off; once you do, you've got to earn your way back into my good graces

I'm not crazy about David Letterman; Leno's okay - I still miss Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall

I'm a big fan of Survivor and look forward to each season

I loved this! It reminded me how much I miss your extraordinary self. Years may wipe away a lot but the essence of the time that we spent will never fade. I was blessed to have you "raise" me.
